Harris' Hawks occur in the Southwest of the U.S. and Central and South America. They prefer open fields with scattered elevated places. Harris' Hawks live in small groups of 2 to 6 birds (often family) and is the only raptor species that hunt in groups! They have a territory of approximately 5 km2. They on (small) birds, snakes, rats, mice and rabbits. They have a dark brown plumage. Belly and chest are lighter in color and have a few white feathers underneath the tail. Females are larger than the males! The beak is yellow, gray to the end. They are about 60 cm high and have a wingspan of 120 centimeters. They weigh between 650 grams and 1200. They nest in small trees, shrubs and cacti. Large owls, coyotes and ravens are their greatest enemies. Life expectancy is 15 to 25 years.
