Camel |
A camel is an even-toed ungulate . There are 2 species : dromedary (Arabian camel), Bactrian camel.
The dromedary has 1 hump, the Bactrian camel has 2 humps.
Camels are held for their milk, meat and as a working animal.
The wild Bactrian Camel is an endangerd species and are now only found in Mongolia and China.
The domesticated Bactrian Camel is found across central Asia (from Turkey to China).
There are no more wild living dromedaries.
They are approximately 14 million dromedaries, many of them found in Somalia, the Sahel, Maghreb, Middle East and Indian subcontinent. There are also approximately 1 million dromedaries in central Australia. They were imported from Africa and the Middle East.
Camels a very strong animals and fully adapted to the hard circumstances of the dessert. They can go weeks without drinking water and they can close their nose during a sandstorm.
