New York, the most populous city in the USA, positioned on the Atlantic coast, was until 1664 known under the name New Amsterdam. It was a dutch fur trading colony. In 1664 the Dutch had to cede the city to the English and the English renamed the city and called it " New York", in order to honour the English Duke of York and Albany.
